MendelQuiz: A journey to the birthplace of genetics

We celebrated 200 years since the birth of father of genetics – Gregor Johann Mendel, who lived in worked in Brno, our innovation capital of #brnoregion. To spread the fascinating tale of his work and life, we offered young and talented researchers from all over Europe to win a trip to follow in his footsteps. How did our winner Emanuele enjoy her journey?
MendelQuiz: A journey to the birthplace of genetics
Emanuele, a researcher in Evolutionary Genetics and Molecular Biology won a 2-day trip to Brno together with her husband Carlos, who is doing research in Quantitative Genetics and Bioinformatics.

"We visited historical places where Mendel lived, worked and spent a lot of time doing his experiments," said Emanuele. As they retraced the steps of Mendel, they felt a deep connection to the history of genetics and the ongoing work in the field. "As geneticist and a passionate admirer of Mendel's work and mission, it was an immense honor for me to delve deeper into the intricacies of the Mendelian theory. Additionally, learning about Mendel's significant impact on the social and economic landscape of Brno and the world was truly enlightening," added Carlos. 
 
Not only did they visit the Augustinian abbey where G. J. Mendel lived, they also got to spend the night there! The Mendel Museum, housed within the Abbey, offered an immersive experience into Mendel's world. The display of his original notes, research tools, and the greenhouse where he cultivated his pea plants left a profound impression.
